NY’s STATEN ISLAND If you enjoy crossfit, weightlifting, or aerobics in New York City, your monthly gym dues may be too expensive. New York is the most costly state in the union to get healthy, according to a recent research that looked at data to determine the average cost of working up a sweat across 80 U.S. cities.
“The disparities in gym membership cost across the states are shocking to see — some areas have a much more accessible rate,” said a representative for totalshape.com, the website that provides fitness resources, which performed the survey.
According to the study, which used data from the cost-of-living website Numbeo, the average monthly expenditure for one adult in New York City is $106.06, which is $61.68 higher than the national average of $44.98. San Francisco comes in second with an average monthly price of $101.27, while Santa Barbara is ranked as the third most expensive region in the US for a gym membership, with people spending an average of $91.75 a month.
The most economical city is Mesa, Arizona, where the average monthly cost for one adult is $18.29. Boston, on the other side, is the tenth most expensive region in the US, with a monthly gym membership costing $67.70.
